    Sassicaia has its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, granted with the 1994 vintage. No other Italian wine does.

    2021 was the cool end of a run of hot years. A February freeze, an April chill that thinned the Cabernet Franc buds, then a dry summer that never turned punishing. Smaller bunches and smaller berries meant less wine, and the fruit came in with technical and phenolic ripeness lined up. Harvest ran by hand from the first days of September into the first week of October.

    Aged 24 months in French barriques from Tronçais, Allier and Jupilles, 40% of them new, then decanted into steel before assembly. Jeb Dunnuck 99 pts. James Suckling 98 pts.
