Sassicaia — from sasso, meaning stone — is named for the rocky, well-drained soils of the Bolgheri coast. Created by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the 1940s from Bordeaux cuttings, it spent over two decades as a family wine before its commercial debut in 1971. It was the first Super Tuscan, and in 2013 it became the first wine in Italy granted its own single-estate DOC.
Rain during flowering reduced yields but produced well-formed clusters. The wine is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc, aged 24 months in French barriques (40% new). Wine Spectator gave it 96 points; Wine Enthusiast 98.
