Sassicaia — from sasso, meaning stone — is named for the rocky, well-drained soils of the Bolgheri coast. Created by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the 1940s from Bordeaux cuttings, it spent over two decades as a family wine before its commercial debut in 1971. It was the first Super Tuscan, and in 1994 it became Italy's only single-estate DOC.
The 2023 vintage was outstanding for Bolgheri — a calm, well-paced growing season with cool temperatures and stable summer conditions. Rain during flowering reduced yields and concentrated the clusters. Harvest ran from early October, a full week later than in the hot vintages of 2021 and 2022. The wine is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc, aged 24 months in French barriques (40% new). Decanter rated it 98 points; Vinous gave it 97.
