Traditional Oak is Balvenie's term for refill American oak, casks that held bourbon and then Scotch before this spirit went in. That wood is well spent, so it gives up very little per year, and after twenty-five years the distillery character is still in front: apples, pears, heather honey.

Every release comes from one cask, with no vatting and no finishing wood. No more than 300 hand-numbered bottles are drawn from each one, and it is never repeated. Bottled at 47.8% and not chill-filtered.

Balvenie still grows some of its own barley outside Dufftown, still turns the 1928 malting floor by hand, and still keeps a coppersmith and a working cooperage on site. No other distillery in Scotland does all of it. WhiskyNotes 86 pts.
