Hakushu is the forest distillery — 700 meters into the Southern Japanese Alps, water drawn from granite-filtered mountain springs, pot stills in shapes Suntory has refined over five decades. The 18-year Peated Malt is its most demanding expression: 100% malted barley, part of it peated, aged in a combination of American oak, sherry casks, and Japanese mizunara for a minimum of 18 years. Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo — the fifth in a century-long succession — assembles the final vatting.

What Suntory calls "Japanese Smoky" is smoke as integration, not declaration. The 2025 edition holds to that: the nose leads with sage, green apple, and lemon peel, then a slow wave of peat works through the palate — herbal and citric, not tar and ash. ISC Gold in 2024 and 2025.
