Thelema sits on the south-east face of the Simonsberg at elevations between 370 and 640 meters — altitude that extends the growing season, tempers the sun, and holds the acidity that Stellenbosch Cabernet from lower-elevation sites occasionally loses. The soils are decomposed granite Hutton: iron-rich, red-earthed, well-drained. Small berry sizes and moderate alcohol make this a structurally precise wine, not a power statement.
The 2020 vintage was a standout year. A cold, wet winter in 2019 loaded the soil; a long, mild growing season let the fruit ripen slowly and evenly. Eighteen months in French oak (30% new), malolactic in barrel, a single racking — winemaker Rudi Schultz keeps the production clean and uncluttered. Tim Atkin gave it 95 points (SA Special Report 2024-2025); Platter's Wine Guide awarded five stars.
