Thelema sits on the south-easterly side of the Simonsberg at around 530 metres, mainly south-facing, among the highest vineyard sites in Stellenbosch, on red Hutton soils of decomposed granite. The Cabernet comes from estate vines planted in 2002, 2003 and 2008 — altitude and aspect slow the ripening and keep the style on the restrained, structured side.
2021 was a warm, dry vintage with a late start: smaller tonnage, balanced and well-structured wines. Picked 23 to 29 March, fermented in stainless steel, malolactic in barrel, then 18 months in French oak, 40% new, with a single racking. Christian Eedes at Winemag gave it 93 points and found more concentration and length than the 2020. Platter's Wine Guide 2025: five stars.
