Upwell is Eric Clemons of Coeur Wine Co. working with a rotating cast of California winemakers on one premise: a California Cabernet with real character should cost less than $20. The 2024 is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petite Sirah off a prime Lodi vineyard, fermented in stainless steel and finished in a mix of stainless and oak.

Lodi's 2024 was a heat-wave year that growers came out of better than they expected — the June heat landed during berry sizing rather than during ripening, leaving loose clusters and small berries, and with them concentrated color and flavor. The Petite Sirah brings the pepper and the structural edge that keeps this from going soft.
