Upwell is a project from Eric Clemons of Coeur Wine Co, built on the idea that California can deliver something genuinely good for under $20. There is no estate behind it: Clemons contracts fruit from cool sites around the state and works with young California winemakers.
2023 gave him a lot to work with. A cold, wet winter ran into a long, cool season and a harvest weeks behind schedule, which is the shape of year Pinot Noir wants.
Fermented in stainless steel with a portion aged in French oak: strawberry and Bing cherry up front, dried herbs and juicy plum behind, tannins that lift rather than grip. Wine Enthusiast 90 pts, Best Buy.
