Upwell is a project from Eric Clemons of Coeur Wine Co, built on the simple idea that California can deliver something genuinely good for under $20. The 2020 draws primarily from North Coast vineyards including Mendocino — a cooler stretch of California that bore little of the smoke damage that hit much of the state that year — yielding clean, fruit-forward Pinot Noir with more precision than the price suggests.
Fermented in stainless and aged mostly in tank with just a touch of French oak, the wine leans into cranberry and candied black cherry with a kiss of black pepper at the finish. Light oak keeps the tannins supple and lets the fruit stay front and center.
