PORTUGAL : CARCAVELOS
Castelão, Trincadeira
MED-BODIED, CARAMELIZED BARLEY SUGAR, ROASTED NUTS, DARK COCOA, BAKING SPICE, OAK
Carcavelos is Portugal's smallest wine appellation — 25 protected hectares west of Lisbon on the Tagus estuary, nearly consumed by urban development and now down to a single producer. Villa Oeiras farms its 12.5 hectares in the former stables of the Marquês de Pombal, from vines tracing back to 18th-century cuttings, making it both the last word in the DOC and the only one that counts.
The Tinto is the first Carcavelos red-grape expression imported to the US — native yeast fermentation, fortification to 19% ABV, then ten years of average barrel age in Nacional and French oak beneath the Pombal palace cellars. The result is lighter and more energetic than Tawny Port, with the same nutty-caramel oxidative signature but more acidity and a saline Atlantic freshness running underneath.
PAIRINGS :
| Crème caramel or flan | caramelized sugar notes echo the dessert; a classic Iberian match |
| Aged hard cheese | salt and crystalline texture against the wine's sweetness and oxidative nuttiness |
| Cured meats (presunto, jamón) | fat and savory umami balance the residual sugar; traditional Iberian pairing |
