Vincent Richard Côtes du Jura Trousseau 2020 750ml
FRANCE : JURA : CÔTES DU JURA
PRACTICING ORGANIC : Trousseau
LIGHT-BODIED, CHERRY, CRANBERRY, FOREST FLOOR, NO OAK
The Côtes du Jura runs along a limestone escarpment between the Saône plain and the Swiss plateau — one of the few French regions where Trousseau, a thin-skinned, deeply saturated red grape, still holds real ground. Domaine Pierre Richard farms 9 hectares on the gravelly marls around Le Vernois, parcels in the family since Xavier Richard founded the estate in 1919; Vincent has run it since 2009, pushing toward organic certification — EcoCert came through for the 2021 harvest. This is the last vintage before the paper caught up with the farming.
The 2020 summer ran warm and dry across Jura, pulling harvest forward into August. Fifteen days of maceration in stainless built structure without extraction; eighteen months on lees in stainless — no oak, no additions — kept everything focused. At 12.5% ABV it sits closer to Beaujolais in weight than Burgundy, more Loire than Côte de Nuits in its earthy precision. Cherry, cranberry, forest floor, fresh acidity, and a subtle tannin grip that makes it work at the table or chilled.
PAIRINGS :
| Charcuterie and pâté | the Jura regional pairing — salty, rich cured meats are built for Trousseau's earthy edge and fresh acidity |
| Duck breast with cherry reduction | fruit mirrors fruit; the wine's light body and cranberry note don't compete with the sauce |
| Mushroom and thyme tart | earthy, forest-floor notes in the wine echo the filling; works at a meatless table as well as any |
