Suntory opened Yamazaki in 1923, Japan's first malt whisky distillery, on a site at the Kyoto/Osaka border chosen for its soft water and the heavy river humidity that pushes spirit into wood faster than Scotland's cooler air does.

Distiller's Reserve arrived in spring 2014 to replace the 10-year bottling, and it carries no age statement by design. Alongside the American oak and Spanish sherry casks you would expect, the blend pulls in whisky matured in Bordeaux red wine casks, which is where the red-berry weight and the light tannic grip come from, plus a component aged in mizunara, the porous Japanese oak that adds sandalwood and incense. The Dramble scored it 85 points and called it a good entry-level whisky and a solid gateway into Japanese whisky.
