SPAIN : RIOJA

MED-FULL-BODIED, BLACK CHERRY, CASSIS, RASPBERRY, SWEET SPICE, HERBS, EARTH, OAK
Traditionally styled Rioja from the Pérez-Villota family's 100ha estate in DOCa Rioja Alavesa (just 50 miles south of the vineyards in Basque Country, this is the smallest and northernmost sub-region of Rioja) ... 'Selvanevada' is elegant and balanced, with complex aromatics and a lively and colorful but clean palate of dark berry fruit, sweet spice (nutmeg, cinnamon), dried herbs, subtle oak, and dense, dusty tannins.
Drink tonight & every night, or hold until ~2029.
FARMING : Conventional (traditional but "respectful") : dry-farmed bush farms are cultivated manually without the use systemic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or fertilizer
WINEMAKING : Varieties ferment separately in stainless steel tanks for 2 weeks; aged for 6 months in French oak barriques
PAIRING : Fabada Asturiana (Spanish Pork & Bean Stew)

Sagrantino
FULL-BODIED, BLACK CHERRY, TAR, FRESH HERBS, EARTH NEUTRAL OAK
‘Sacris’ could definitely benefit from some more bottle age in order to let its tannins soften up a bit (FYI, Sagrantino has the thickest skin of any other wine grape in the world)...it also has the right balance and structure to age long and gracefully, and just happens to be the first-ever 100% Sagrantino made in Oregon. Conclusion: ‘Sacris’ might make a very cool, unique bottle to collect & cellar (until 2028-2060)!

PORTUGAL : ALTENEJO : PORTALEGRE
Grand Noir de la Calmette, Alicante Bouschet, Trincadeira, Castelão, Aragónez, Arinto, Fernão Pires
MED-BODIED, STRAWBERRY, BLACK CHERRY, ORANGE PEEL, LICORICE, EARTH, USED OAK
The complex, elegant, and even — dare we say it — Burgundian (??) wines of Vitor Claro and Rita Ferreira at Dominó Winery come from a small, old vine vineyard of co-planted varietals in the Portalegre district of Alentejo, which is known for its uniquely cool climate in an otherwise warm region. ‘Salão Frio’ is their first — and, to date, most important — wine. A true pleasure to drink, it pairs well with a remarkable range of flavors, and is blessedly only about 11% alcohol (because just one glass is certainly not enough).ECOLOGY: Sustainable

Riesling

Named after the deep red hue of the iron-rich sandstone soils at Schödl’s plot in the town of Blumenthal, ‘Rote Erte’ (literally, “red soil”) is a tart, bone dry Riesling that teeters between beautiful citrus fruit and textured savory notes. From the producer:
"The Boss Hog X transcends tradition with a double finish inspired by our own land of milk and honey. Each barrel of Straight Rye Whiskey is aged in new American Oak before completing its journey in two unorthodox finishing barrels. The first is seasoned with our own experimental spirit – distilled from rye and whey, infused with aromatic resins from the genera commonly known as Frankincense and Myrrh – delivering notes of creme brulee, lemongrass and rosemary to the final whiskey. The second and final finish is aged in craft mead casks, offering a mellow, round-bodied finish with hints of red berries and freshly crushed black pepper."
