For those unfamiliar with the wonders of Macabeo (only the most important white grape of the Rioja region), let this box be your introduction! CALIFORNIA : SONOMA COUNTY : RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY
Pinot Noir
MED-FULL-BODIED, FIG, BLACK PLUM, CLOVE, COFFEE, COCOA POWDER, HAY, TOAST, OAK
A dark and compelling example of Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. Rich, perfumed dark fruit aromas on the nose are met by spicy black fig, coffee, cocoa powder, and oak toast flavors on the palate. Undeniably a dense and brooding wine, it remains lifted and nuanced, with a lovely softness to the mouthfeel and a gratifyingly long finish that carries notes of clove, nutmeg, and other barrel spices.

Cabernet Franc
MED-BODIED, DRIED CHERRY, RHUBARB, BROWN SUGAR, STONE, NEUTRAL OAK
The Rogue Valley AVA in southern Oregon is what they call a “Goldilocks zone” in terms of producing (some of the best) Cabernet Franc (in the world) — warm enough to get grapes ripe, but cool enough to keep sugar levels low and allow the individual winemaker to create their desired style. Spontaneously fermented; 100% whole cluster; aged in neutral French oak for 8 months; incredibly complex & lacking in nothing.

We were somewhat surprised to learn that Isabelle and Denis Pommier’s organically farmed 16 hectare estate in Chablis (est. 1990) near the village of Poinchy is one of the very few in the region to hand-harvest a significant portion of their production! Although most known for their distinctly mineral and terroir-driven Chablis, they also make a small amount of Bourgogne Rouge, such as the beautiful and energetic “Grain de Survie,’ which is equal parts fruit, floral, and earth.

Bone dry and ultra-light, with sharp acidity and soft, airy citrus notes, ‘Zehnkomanull’ (which means “10 point 0,” referencing that the wine never ferments past 10% abv) is made from rescued parcels of steeply terraced, old-vine Elbling (an ancient grape believed to have arrived in Germany 2,000 years ago with the Romans). Convivial, refreshing, and delightfully simple, it's a wine meant to be enjoyed and not overthought.

His latest project is Carneros Ranch, an offshoot of the greater Mahoney wine portfolio that aims to produce a modern style of fresh, fruit-forward wines that are characteristically rich and layered, but with greater emphasis on balance, accessibility, and affordability. FRANCE : ALSACE
Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sylvaner

Christian Binner (maker of legendary “zero-zero” wines in Alsace for over 20 years) launched “Les Vins Pirouettes” to support small vignerons in making soulful, terroir-driven wines under their own names — a welcome alternative to selling their grapes to co-ops at criminally low prices. Each wine released from the collective is completely unique (and very limited) — generous and easy-to-drink, ‘Eros’ falls on the side of less funky and is a perfect orange wine for any drinker.
