Despite being relatively new to the scene, Claire Hill (who worked throughout Sonoma, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and with the legendary Éric Texier in the Rhône Valley before launching her own winery in 2016) has already proven herself an incredibly talented and thoughtful winemaker.
Her sleek, classically-styled Chardonnay shows richness with restraint, and comes from dry-farmed vines planted in 1945 (the second oldest Chardonnay plot in California!).

Sourced from a tiny parcel of Grand Cru Saint-Émilion vines tended to by Catherine Grébau, 'Christiana' was created with the help of Grébau's son, Bertrand (an esteemed chef and creator of Septime in Paris). Although classic in style, 'Christiana' is equal parts elegance and warmth, and therefore feels a bit more approachable than some of its peers – with concentrated dark fruit, fresh acidity, and soft tannins.

The successor to the now-silent Brora, built just opposite. This coastal highland malt exudes nice maritime notes with a nice smokiness. The nose gives way to floral notes as well as sea breezes. On the palate it is rich, yet smooth and gives way to a little honeyed flavor and a small amount of peat. An absolute steal in terms of quality.

Forget that Stellenbosch isn’t exactly known for Pinot Gris: this minimal-intervention, skin-contact wine from Craven Wines allows the beautiful (and oft underappreciated) coppery/dark rose hues of the grape’s skins to shine as they should -- allowing clean red fruit, lively citrus, and pretty floral notes met with delicate, balanced tannins.
